Preparing for holiday travel: nasal rinses, hydration, packing ENT “essentials”

The holiday season usually means time spent traveling, whether it’s around the block or across the country to visit family and friends. While it’s an exciting time, travel can take a toll on your sinuses, ears, and throat. Dry airplane cabin air, changes in pressure, and exposure to new environments can all trigger nasal congestion, sinus pressure, or sore throats. Luckily, a little preparation goes a long way in keeping your ears, nose, and throat healthy during your journey.

The Power of Saline Sprays

If you’re flying and prone to ear or sinus pressure problems, chew gum, yawn, or gently pinch your nose and blow during ascent and descent. Using a saline spray just before takeoff and landing can also help equalize pressure.

Airplane cabins and hotel rooms tend to have very low humidity, which can dry out the nasal passages and make them more prone to irritation and infection. Saline nasal rinses or sprays are simple but powerful tools for keeping your nasal passages clean and moisturized. Rinse before you travel to clear allergens or mucus, and again after you arrive to wash away any irritants you’ve picked up along the way.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration is one of the most common but preventable issues during travel. The dry, recirculated air on planes or long road trips can deplete your body’s moisture levels quickly. Bring a refillable water bottle and sip it throughout your journey. Staying hydrated helps maintain healthy mucous membranes in the nose and throat, which are your body’s first line of defense against viruses. Avoid excess caffeine and alcohol, which can worsen dehydration and nasal dryness.

Creating a small “ENT essentials” kit can make travel much more comfortable. Include:

  • Saline spray
  • Lubricating eye drops
  • Decongestants
  • Antihistamines
  • Earplugs
  • Throat lozenges
  • Portable humidifier
  • Hydrating facial mist
