Ringing in the New Year: When Tinnitus Warrants an ENT Evaluation

Are you ringing in the new year…but it’s only in your head? If you’re starting the new year with a ringing, buzzing or humming sound in your ears that no one else seems to hear, you may be experiencing tinnitus. This condition affects millions of people and can range from mildly annoying to significantly disruptive. While occasional ringing after a loud concert or exposure to excessive noise is normal, persistent tinnitus should never be ignored.

Tinnitus isn’t a disease itself, but rather a symptom of something affecting the auditory system. It can be caused by hearing loss, earwax buildup, middle ear infections or exposure to loud sounds. Certain medications, jaw disorders like TMJ or circulation problems can also contribute. Sometimes the cause is temporary, but in other cases, tinnitus may be indicative of permanent inner ear damage.

If the ringing lasts more than a week, occurs in only one ear, is accompanied by dizziness or hearing loss or interferes with your daily life, it’s time to schedule an evaluation with an ENT physician. They can perform a comprehensive ear exam and hearing test to determine the source of the tinnitus and recommend appropriate treatment.

While there’s no single cure for tinnitus, many patients find relief through targeted treatments. Depending on the cause, your ENT may remove earwax, treat underlying infections, adjust medications or recommend hearing aids with masking features. Sound therapy, relaxation techniques and managing stress can also reduce tinnitus symptoms.

Prevention plays a key role in avoiding tinnitus or worsening symptoms. Protect your ears from loud noise by wearing earplugs at concerts or when using power tools. Keep the volume moderate on headphones and schedule regular hearing checkups, especially if you work in noisy environments
