What Does an ENT Doctor Do?

An ear, nose and throat doctor (ENT), also referred to as an otolaryngologist, has special medical training to diagnose and treat disorders of the head and neck. Not only do they have a medical degree; they also have at least 5 additional years of specialty training to gain the knowledge to pass an exam by the American Board of Otolaryngology. ENTs provide both medical and surgical care to treat a wide variety of ear, nose and throat conditions. ENTs focus on improving the function of 3 of our senses: sound, smell and taste.

Ears

ENTs identify the source of ear pain or hearing difficulties and loss of hearing, providing treatments for:

  • Ear infections
  • Hearing loss/tinnitus
  • Balance disorders/dizziness

Nose

ENTs identify the source of snoring, sleeping problems and loss of smell, providing treatments for:

  • Nasal congestion/breathing problems
  • Nasal polyps
  • Sinus pain/sinusitis
  • Deviated septum

Throat

ENTs identify the source of throat issues, voice problems and loss of taste, providing treatments for:

  • Vocal difficulties
  • Problems swallowing
  • Tonsillitis
  • Sore throat
  • Hoarseness
