Clear hearing is essential for language development, reading comprehension and classroom participation. Even mild hearing loss can affect a child’s ability to follow instructions, engage with teachers & peers and keep up academically. Children rely heavily on hearing to absorb new information, especially in the early years before they learn how to read. Unlike vision issues, hearing problems are not always obvious; a child may appear to be attentive while they are actually missing key parts of classroom instruction.

Causes of Hearing Loss in School-Aged Children

At an ENT office, a hearing test can be combined with a full examination of the ear, tympanometry to assess middle ear function and evaluation for fluid, infection or wax buildup in the ear. A thorough approach helps ensure that any hearing issues are accurately diagnosed and appropriately treated.
