Fall Allergy Triggers

Fall has finally arrived! The air is crisp with the scent of fallen leaves, apples, pumpkin spice, and…allergens. While spring may be more synonymous with allergy season, autumn can be just as challenging for those with seasonal allergies. Here’s how to handle your fall allergy triggers so you can enjoy the season comfortably.

 Common Fall Allergens

  • Ragweed pollen is the most common fall allergen, releasing pollen from late summer through first frost. Even if you don’t have ragweed growing near you, its pollen can be carried for hundreds of miles in the wind.
  • Mold spores become airborne from falling leaves, decaying vegetation, stagnant soil and environments like damp basements.
  • Dust mites become more concentrated as windows are closed and heating systems turned on. Pulling out winter clothing or blankets that have been stored all summer can also release dust mites.
  • Pet dander increases as people and their pets start spending more time indoors together.

Treatment Options for Fall Allergies

  • Avoid allergy triggers by limiting outdoor activities when pollen counts are high. Keep windows closed, shower after spending time outside and consider using a mask if you have to rake leaves or garden. If your allergies are triggered by indoor allergens, clean your clothing and bedding before using them. Keep animals out of the room you sleep in and be sure to change the air filter in your HVAC system.
  • Over-the-counter medications like antihistamines, nasal sprays and saline rinses can relieve the worst of your symptoms, be it congestion, a runny nose or itchy eyes.
  • Prescription medications can often handle what over-the-counter medicines cannot.
  • Immunotherapy through allergy shots gradually trains your immune system to react less to specific allergens, offering you long-term relief over time.
  • See an ENT or allergist to identify your specific triggers and create a personal management plan.

Fall allergies don’t have to keep you from enjoying pumpkin patches, football games and cozy evenings by the fire. With the right preventive treatments, you can breathe easier and embrace the season.
