How Chlorine Can Affect Your Ear, Nose, & Throat (ENT) System
Chlorine is a common swimming pool disinfectant used to keep pool water free from harmful bacteria. While important for safe water recreation, chlorine exposure can irritate the ears, nose and throat. If you’re a frequent swimmer or have respiratory sensitives, knowing how chlorine can affect your ear, nose and throat (ENT) system can help you can avoid discomfort.
When chlorine is added to water and mixes with sweat or oil, it forms chemical byproducts called chloramines. Chloramines are what give pools that distinctive chlorine smell; this is the primary irritant to the ENT system. Exposure occurs through direct contact with chlorinated water or inhalation of the chloramine vapors. Either way, both can affect the delicate mucosal tissues lining the nose, throat and ears.
The nasal passages, throat and even ears are highly sensitive to chemical irritants. For some people, chlorine exposure can lead to:
- Nasal congestion or stuffiness
- A burning or stinging sensation in the nose
- Increased mucus production
- Postnasal drip
- A scratchy or sore throat after swimming
- A dry cough
- Hoarseness
- Throat dryness
- Swimmer’s ear
- Itching in the ear canal
Repeated irritation may also dry out the nasal lining, making it more vulnerable to inflammation and infection over time. For swimmers who spend long hours in indoor pools with poor ventilation, symptoms may be amplified due to higher concentrations of chloramine in the air. Young children and those with allergies or asthma are also more likely to experience ENT symptoms after chlorine exposure.
To reduce ENT system irritation, use well-ventilated or properly balanced pools and take breaks to minimize exposure at indoor pools. When appropriate, wear a swim cap and ear protection to prevent water exposure of the ears. Shower and use saline nasal rinses after swimming and make sure the ears are thoroughly dried.
