Love Your Appearance: Otoplasty Explained
Do you feel self-conscious about ears that stick out? Do you wish your ears looked more balanced with your facial features? If so, you are not alone. Many people feel that prominent ears affect their confidence.
Fortunately, otoplasty offers a safe and effective solution. Also known as ear pinning surgery, otoplasty reshapes or repositions the ears. As a result, patients often feel more comfortable and confident in their appearance.
What Is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the shape, size, or position of the outer ear. In most cases, it is used to bring protruding ears closer to the head. However, it can also correct asymmetry or improve ear shape caused by birth differences or injury.
At Biltmore ENT, experienced reconstructive surgeons perform otoplasty using precise techniques. Small, carefully placed incisions help minimize visible scarring. Because of this, the ears look natural and balanced after healing.
Otoplasty can be performed on adults and on children once their ears have reached full size.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?
Otoplasty may be a good option if you:
- Are bothered by ears that protrude or appear uneven
- Feel self-conscious about the appearance of your ears
- Want a permanent solution instead of hiding your ears with hair or hats
- Are in good overall health
- Have realistic expectations about results and recovery
During a consultation, your surgeon can help determine whether otoplasty is right for you.
What Happens During Otoplasty Surgery?
During the procedure, the surgeon makes small incisions behind the ear or within natural folds. This allows access to the ear cartilage while keeping scars discreet.
Next, the cartilage is reshaped, folded, or repositioned. Sutures are then used to hold the ear in its new position. As a result, the ears sit closer to the head and appear more balanced.
The procedure usually takes one to two hours. In addition, it is almost always performed on an outpatient basis.
What Is Recovery Like After Otoplasty?
After surgery, your ears will be bandaged to protect and support them. During recovery, patients are typically advised to:
- Sleep on their back
- Avoid pressure on the ears
- Wear button-down shirts to prevent irritation
In some cases, a soft headband may be worn for several weeks, either during the day or at night. Most patients return to normal daily activities within about one week. However, strenuous activities should be avoided until healing is complete.
Feel More Confident With Otoplasty
Your ears do not have to define your first impression or affect how you feel about yourself. Otoplasty has helped many people feel more confident and comfortable in their appearance.
If you have ever wished your ears sat differently, this procedure may help you love what you see in the mirror.
