Summer Allergies

Summer brings sunny days, warm weather and outdoor fun; what’s not to love? For many people, the answer is seasonal allergies, which can make summer difficult to enjoy to the fullest. With a better understanding of summer allergy causes, symptoms and treatments, you can be back to loving summer in no time.

As summer heats up, more of our life moves outside, exposing us to more allergens. Bermuda, Timothy and Kentucky bluegrass bloom this time of year, releasing pollen that can be a trigger for hay fever. Warm, humid conditions can promote outdoor mold growth, spiking allergies when it becomes airborne. Bees, wasps and mosquitoes are out and about, increasing the risk of a bite or sting. Environmental irritants, like campfire smoke or chlorine from pools, can also exacerbate allergy symptoms.

Those symptoms can range from mild to severe. Sneezing, a runny nose or congestion are all common allergen responses. Itchy, watery eyes or coughing and wheezing can also occur. Skin irritation or rashes are also a sign it’s time to address your allergies.

To manage summer allergy symptoms, you can:

  • Track pollen levels and limit outdoor activities when they’re high
  • Change clothing or shower after spending time outside to limit its spread inside
  • Use air purifiers and keep windows and doors closed to reduce indoor allergens
  • Take antihistamines, decongestants or nasal sprays to relieve symptoms
  • Wear protective clothing, like sunglasses and hats, to shield yourself from airborne allergens
