Treatments for Recurring Sore Throats

While a sore throat is usually a passing symptom of a viral or bacterial infection, frequent episodes may indicate an underlying condition that won’t go away on its own. To finally rid yourself of a recurring sore throat, you’ll need to address the root cause. What treatments are available for a sore throat that just won’t go away?

Tonsillitis occurs when the tonsils become infected and inflamed. If you experience frequent sore throats, difficulty swallowing or swollen tonsils, chronic tonsillitis may be the culprit. A tonsillectomy may be recommended. This procedure is considered when tonsillitis causes frequent infections or significantly affects quality of life. Once the tonsils are removed, the frequency and severity of sore throats usually decrease.

Acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), can cause stomach acid to back up into the throat, irritating the tissue. Many with acid reflux experience their worst symptoms at night because of the positional change of lying down. If acid reflux is causing your sore throat, lifestyle changes and medications can help manage symptoms. Over-the-counter or prescription proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can reduce the amount of stomach acid reaching your throat. You can also avoid acidic, spicy or fatty foods that trigger reflux. Sleeping with your head elevated can also reduce nighttime reflux and throat irritation.

Seasonal or environmental allergies can trigger postnasal drip, where mucus drains down the back of your throat, causing irritation and soreness. People with chronic allergies may experience sore throats frequently, especially during their peak allergy season. Addressing your allergies with medication is an effective preventative. Antihistamines to control allergic reactions and nasal corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and mucus buildup can also prevent your allergies from flaring.

Bacterial infections, like strep throat, can cause recurring sore throat symptoms when left untreated. Strep throat especially can lead to complications and repeated infections. If your recurring sore throats are caused by bacterial infections like strep throat, antibiotics may be necessary. Completing the full course of antibiotics helps prevent the infection from returning and reduces the risk of complications.
